When you get a chance to learn from a master, ALWAYS SAY YES! I love to learn new things when I travel, and while we were in Spain I kept an eye out for opportunities to learn some new things. Michael offered a morning class in his workshop where one could make a belt, a purse, or any other sort of simple leather project. My dad needed a passport wallet, so off we went on an adventure!
Michael’s background includes leather sculpture and prop-making for movies and TV. His workshop was about 15’x15′ and contained so many tools I was quite envious. I wasn’t as interested in making something specific as I was in learning new techniques, so our time with him was largely me peppering him with questions about his projects, where he learned, and how he learned.
The specific things I learned were leather weaving, hand-stitching, and flower making.
